Can I neutralize just the smell? I certainly can live without onions so no big deal. But im a bit frustrated. I spent more time dealing with the onion and its aftermath than I did anything
Onions need to be sauteed a bit first. Until they're translucent. And, if you don't like strong onion smell, don't buy white onions. Pick up yellow onions or Vidalas if you can find them. White onions are used a lot in Mexican cooking, yellow are a bit milder, red are good for salads.

I love onions and my kid bought me a juicer -- I had this great idea to make my own V8-type drink and I juiced some tomatoes and a whole white onion. Big mistake. The liquid was hot when I chugged it down, and immediately afterward I started feeling flush all over and lightheaded. Within five minutes, I was over the pot and it all came back up. I never did that again.

If you put the onion in a freezer bag it won't smell up your fridge.

For food storage get glass containers with decent lids that you can use in the mircowave leftovers. The cheap lids will not survive. Don't lock them down, just lay them on top to prevent the need for massive microwave cleaning.

I use red onions. Very rarely white onions and almost never yellow onions.
