India and China Move In More Troops as Border Tensions Rise

Not a lot of troops are involved, about 5000 on each side, but there already have been skirmishes. Will it escalate?

India has moved additional troops along its northern border as it prepares for an extended conflict with neighbor China, after several rounds of talks failed to ease tensions between the nuclear-armed rivals. China has already placed about 5,000 soldiers and armored vehicles within its side of the disputed border in the Ladakh region, an Indian government official said, asking not to be identified....

Geez. We were just speaking to how China is at odds with Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the United States. And now it's India it seems to have a dispute with as well. Would make Pete's thread start about China and Russia becoming closer allies given China's standing in the world over covid, given it's current economic issues, given other 'disputes' on third and fourth fronts...a closer tie with too close Russia makes much sense.

Great job Pete. This really is a grasp and birds eye view of current realities in the region. China making allies and adversaries. The United States obviously not even it's largest issue at the moment. Under a great deal more pressure then many realize and your article attests to that.

Reading a book right now on this "Ladakh region" spoken to. Author's name is Spector. Eagle against the Sun the book. A great read on the WWII campaign against the Japanese. It's a great read discussing the regional conflict then.....and makes all the more sense today.

In addition to the border dispute, some of the core issues in the Sino-Indian rivalry include Tibet (the presence of the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan government-in-exile, and tens of thousands of Tibetan exiles in India), the burgeoning China-Pakistan partnership, and the two countries’ overlapping spheres of influence in Asia. These issues have become more salient in the context of the two countries’ simultaneous but asymmetric rising power.

In addition to accruing power domestically, India is also building strong strategic partnerships with China’s other rivals, especially the United States and Japan. Meanwhile, a rising China has stabilized its northern borders with Russia and is working to undermine the United States’ primacy in the East Asian maritime commons through the modernization of its military and its push to build islands. This basically leaves only one border issue with a rival unresolved: namely, the Sino-Indian border. It is hardly surprising that it is exerting periodic pressure on India along this front—a trend that is only likely to escalate.

To avert a conflict spiral India will need to pursue a multifaceted strategy which will need to include cooperative elements such as summit diplomacy and working together in international institutions such the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the New Development Bank, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. But while these cooperative endeavors could forestall more border violence, they will not address core outstanding issues in Sino-Indian relations. Short of making significant territorial concessions, there is little that India can do to assuage the underlying sources of the rivalry.....snip~

Oh well in that case. India can tie themselves to Taiwan and Hong Kong. Bring back the Quad. Then when China jumps. Open a can of whoopass on them.
History does not long Entrust the care of Freedom, to the Weak or Timid!!!!! Dwight D. Eisenhower ~

Of all you mention, you left out China's only truly reliable ally: American media.

    Our media is absolutely deplorable.

Are you saying they won't back down? They have a lot of irons in the fire right now, and nobody likes it that they do (except American media, as I said). Nobody likes what they're doing.

They haven't exactly been currying any favor lately either. So yeah, I'd gladly take your bet if you weren't nuts.
