Post The Woman Who Found a Snail in Her Soda and Launched a Million Lawsuits

Sixty-six years before the infamous spilled McDonald’s coffee, May Donoghue drank a ginger beer with a dead mollusk in it and changed personal-injury law forever.
I have defended scores of contaminated food cases in 33 years of defending lawsuits. I'd never heard of this case until today.

The industrial era was still going strong at that point, and most laws weren't created for the new civilization that was growing rapidly.

Also, most rural areas at that point did not have many, if any, sanitation laws in effect.

This probably wouldn't have been an issue if was anything other than a snail. Snails can be deadly, especially ones that have been fermented.

I read an article last fall about a kid who swallowed a slug as a dare. He was dead the next day.

Someone had an effect. I was in a can producer (Ball container)in VA and was shocked at the amount of care that they go through to make sure that even a thread, does not end up in a can. I only mentioned the name in admiration of their quality control. Basically a single flaw, meaning the can shows or an air gap in any single can staked on the pallets with pads between layers, resulted in the entire lot being tossed. Not cleaned. Just scrapped.
Avoiding a law suit was job one.

I prefer food that does not attempt to leave my plate while I'm eating.

I consider myself relatively adventurous with food, but some things just make me gag. Escargot is one of them.
