It is unfortunate they went out of production in 1985. Every once in a while, one will show up on one of the auction sites, but as a general rule, people who have them don't let them go. The GP100 (the model that replaced it) is also an excellent gun, but you would never get me to swap my Security Six for one.

There are a lot of good choices for someone looking for a new production revolver. The GP100, any of the Smiths, one that is often overlooked is Taurus. I really like their Tracker series. My 4" .44 Magnum is a Tracker. The Ribber Grips that come stock on them are probably the most comfortable recoil absorbing grips I have ever used. There is one more revolver I will probably get and that is a 3" Taurus 692.

Of course, the Gold Standard for revolvers is the Colt Python. Colt just brought them back into production. I have not shot one of the new ones yet, but the originals had actions that were smooth as glass.

Thanks for the offer of the Hogues. I have always liked their grips and have them on just about all my handguns except my Glocks and that .44 Tracker. I do have one 1911 with Pachmayr grips. That is a 70 series Colt Commander

When I was in college and law school I had a S&W Model 64, 2" barrel with a spurless hammer rated to shoot the .38+P round. It was a perfect carry conceal weapon. I shot as accurate with it at 20 meters or closer as I shot with my SIG P220. Not so much beyond 20 meters.

The current Ruger GP-100 is very similar.

Avoid those short barreled (under 4 inches) boomers. You will not be able to hit anything beyond living room distances and the muzzle blast and noise is deafening. This is why you see so many of them on the used market. Buy once, cry once.

.357 Magnum caliber, but you can shoot the milder 38 Special in it too.

Easy to break down and clean, and is very rugged and accurate.

Just replace the factory grips with noeprene Pachmyer grips and you will never look back.

The grips pictured are Hogue grips that I took off and still have.

It would have been problematic to try to bring it to NY. I wish I never got rid of it.

    I occasionally carry a revolver . A Ruger sp 101 with a 2 1/4 barrel in .357 stainless 5 rd
I pick this gun because its easy to conceal small in size fits in my pants pocket with ease and fires either 357 mag or 38 shells.
its fairly accurate for a fixed sight short barrel gun .
but its rugged . its about the smallest 357 mag revolver you can buy that will stand up to a steady diet of 357 mag rounds and hold up.

I also occasionally carry a Taurus total titanium . its a bigger stubby with a ported barrel and holds 7 rounds 2 in and fixed sights even ported with its ultra light weight is has a lot of recoil .
I got it years ago because of the light weight and 7 rds it makes a great waist band gun or coat pocket gun.

What are you going to use it for...home protection or concealed carry, thats your first decision

Smith and Wesson make some of the best revolvers there are other manufacturers that are cheaper that are decent guns

Also why a revolver and not a pistol

Concealed carry or home defense? I assume concealed carry. For home defense consider any AR platform with appropriate ammunition.

I opted not to carry a revolver. I have learned to like a G-26D. I can almost always get a good sight picture immediately on draw.

    I want an all-purpose revolver.

Generally speaking, I would say revolvers are more dependable due to the simplicity of their design. Magazine-fed weapons are more likely to jam.

    All-purpose.

Theoretically, if I were to get an AR platform, it would be the Bushmaster XM-15. Unfortunately, I would have lost it during a boating accident.
