Post Have these riots killed downtown living?

Cleveland has undergone someone of a phenomena lately in that the tall buildings were being bought and converted into apartments and condominiums. Most of the offices have had to move out to the first or second ring. I am wondering whether the Vicious riot and burn down Saturday night will have a tremendous impact on people rethinking whether to even consider living in the downtown of a city like Cleveland.

I do. This rioting may kill the "let's all live downtown" movement. Thoughts?

I think it will make a huge difference. The "revitalization" of many big city downtown areas has been in motion for a while now. Memphis is a good example. For years downtown and residential development along the Mississippi River and on Mud Island was the thing. Over the past few years some areas that were prime 15-20 years ago are starting to gradually be infiltrated with a bad element. In the past 3-4 years a mass exodus is occuring, myself one of them. Safety is a huge concern for residents in those areas because you still cannot outrun the street that lies beneath you. The riots are a larger version of what has been occuring for a while.

Not unless everything that attracts people to downtown living ceases to exist. People continue to live in all manner of places that present hazards because it suits their lifestyle or provides them with an income. Why else live in places that are prone to hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and wildfires?

Crime isn’t a natural disaster. It has caused much flight in this country.

The best example to answer this thread is Baltimores Inner Harbor, it was part of "DEAR GOD" lets do something anything for Baltimore.

It worked Inner Harbor was a great place to go it had many attractions and I went there on 3 occaisions. It became a huge source of revenue for the city.

Now its nothing what it was and its dying if not dead because the rest of the cities criminal and thug element pushed their way in and destroyed the tourism

New York Cities regular folk Tourism is way down, the rich and famous still go there because they are insulated.

Why would anyone go anywhere near an area that they have better than a 50/50 chance to be a victim

Unless protests and civil unrest become a consistent feature of these neighborhoods, rather than rare or occasional events, people will regard them the same way they do natural disasters.

It probably depends on the % of the area that is black. When I say that I was thinking that younger people like the downtown life where they can walk everywhere. If the shops don't see the area is safe to open businesses after these riots then the attraction is gone for the young.
However I have lived in smaller cities that have converted these districts but they are not in a significant black population area. I say Black because I can't recall an Hispanic or Asian riot in my lifetime.

Nope you are wrong, this is not civil unrest and protests, this is violent rioting and looting and attacking police and other people and threatening others...You cant sugarcoat this with the typical liberal honey drizzle..

They are destroying historic and notable sites in cities that cannot be replaced, it will be a long time before cities can even get back to looking halfway like they did and by the any tourists head back it will be a slow dribble but the cities will have lost hundreds of millions or more..

You are going to pay for this, every white person and black person that works is going to pay for all this.

Doc before this even happened flas population in a few years went up near 4million full time residents, thats not counting people that have bought homes here and not getting homesteaded.

Those people are from NYC and other cities in the North east, I dont expect you to admit it, but cuomo, diblasio and their disgusting citie appointees are literally chasing the working class out of the city

If you think NY is unique its not...philly already emptied out the working class, detroit, you get the rest..
