Here are several maps of the Indian tribes on the North American continent. Pretty cool.

By the age of 10, most children in the United States have been taught all 50 states that make up the country. But centuries ago, the land that is now the United States was a very different place. Over 20 million Native Americans dispersed across over 1,000 distinct tribes, bands, and ethnic groups populated the territory. Today, Native Americans account for just 1.5 percent of the population, and much of their history has been lost, particularly as today’s education system is sadly lacking when it comes to teaching the rich and complex history of the United States. Here we examine little-known facts about Native Americans, which should be included in every history book.

Is there anywhere, except for very few remote and inhospitable regions where the people have not been displaced by others?

Arizona has the second-highest number of American Indian citizens of any state. The Navajo nation, in what is called the Four Corners region and which reaches into New Mexico, Utah and Colorado, represents a sizable portion of the tribe's traditional lands. The Salt River Pima and Maricopa tribes have banded together into one community and built an impressive commercial district in the Scottsdale area, which includes the Arizona Diamondbacks' Spring Training facility.

Even that map was constantly changing as the tribes warred with each other. Took over lands, force other tribes out and took captives as slaves. Yes you heard that right SLAVES

Returning the lands (much less exactly as we found it) is idealistic. But it isn't realistic.

There is a great deal of lands that fell to the victor, and not just here in the US, where it would be idealistic to return them (and their resources) to the original dwellers. But it can't happen. The best that we could discuss, would be returning the governing of those lands to the original dwellers.

Have a long talk with a couple of Scots on the subject, it's quite the education.
