But now maybe its on their radar. Maybe just maintain it with grass and they forget about it, you treat it as an extension of your property?

Depends how much work would be involved I suppose.

I’ll keep an eye on it. If they don’t maintain it, I’ll take care of a small portion of it and just use it as if it was mine.

Why would they bill me for the cost of the clean up of their property? I’d bury them.

If, for whatever reason, they continue to believe that the overgrown property is yours, then because it ultimately falls to the city to ensure that noxious weeds are not allowed to proliferate, they will clean up the property, but send you the bill or even add it to your tax bill. It works that way in most cities and towns. I'm sure that you could prove in Court that it is not included on your deed, but certainly if they are not claiming ownership, it might be very profitable for you to obtain title. Perhaps the donation of the land to the city was not properly registered which would make it part of the parcel of land that you occupy. Perhaps you have even been paying taxes on it without knowing.

A couple of weeks ago I received a letter from the city informing me that I was in violation of a city code by allowing my yard to be overgrown with noxious weeds.

My landscape is pretty much manicured. If there’s a nicer maintained yard in my neighborhood I haven’t seen it.

I called the city to inquire as to what they were talking about. I told them that I’m not going to do anything until they sent someone to my property to show me what they are talking about.

A woman finally coordinated to meet with me. She walked my property to include my garden. Finally she pointed to a vacant lot next to mine. She said that I need to get it under control.

I had to inform this clueless dolt that the lot in question was city property and donated by the previous own so the city could build a small water front park. The park never happened.

She stood by her claim that the property was mine and I am responsible for its maintenance. I told her once again it’s not responsibility to maintain city property, but I will if the city will deed it to me.

She said that she’s made the city’s position clear and I’ll be fined if don’t comply. Yesterday the city showed up with a maintenance crew to start a clean up. After they clean it up, I just might treat it as if it is mine.

I don’t need one. I know where my property lines are. They are marked. The city people are just incompetent.

Besides, they have sent out a crew to clean it up. That tells me that they figured out that the property is theirs.

It’s a pretty choice piece of property. I’m going to use it as if it’s mine once they clean it up.

The property is fenced, but I have a gate leading into the property, so they can’t secure it unless they build another fence.

I doubt that they are going to Bill me. They would have informed me that they were going to do that by a certain date. I believe they actually checked the records and discovered that the city does indeed own the property.

I have not been paying taxes on that land. I'm not the registered deed holder. If the city actually bills me for the clean up, I can absolutely prove that the land is owned by the city.

Two mayors ago I inquired about buying the lot from the city. That mayor told me that the city can't sell it as it was donated to the city for a specific purpose by a church group. That purpose was to build a park, but the city didn't have the funds to build this park.

I received an email from the city this morning. They now acknowledge that they own the property and I can disregard the violation notice.
