It's a fact that Columbus discovered S. America while trying to find a route to India (the northwest passage) and in fact thought S. America was part of Asia. Cabot tried to find a more northerly (and shorter) route to Asia and bumped into N. America in June of 1497 which was also thought to be part of Asia. Columbus has nothing to do with the discovery of N. America or its later colonization by the British. Cabot established the route from Britain to N. America, which had everything to do with the establishment of the 13 colonies and the founding of America.
