I did not know even half of this....

One of my employee's and as funny as it sounds someone I consider to be a mentor, were having a conversation on the Education of poor communities, which in many if not most cases have a very large minority community.

You will hear me talking a lot about this issue, as I find it appalling to see the state of the schools in these areas, and the systematic lack of education provided to the young people in these communities. It will be the area where I am most involved and my number one political issue because of the importance of giving people hope.

Issac, pointed me to this web site, and just now I took the time to check it out. As an educated Black Man, he told me that he only know of about 1/3 of these individuals And what a shame...

If you want to see people that overcame some of the worst oppression and not only were successful but at a level that allow many of them to change history. This list is a great place to start.

I wish more of this was a regular part of all of our schools The men and women on this sight should be an inspiration to us all.

That depends on the state Zelmo, that is not true of all states.

New Jersey and New York have laws dictating how much must be pushed into minority lower producing schools. Theyve had these laws for many years decades...and they havent made one iota of a difference

Florida does very well in education, I was actually surprised how well they are across the board...however, fla is county run education, each county runs theirs and theres 67 counties in fla

Opportunity matters. Education helps but it is hardly a panacea. Years ago jobs were local you took the bus, walked, or in Philly the subway. Even jobs I held early in my career are now automated or overseas. EEO tried to correct some of the racist attitudes and it probably helped some. But they obviously still persist, Race and racism is America's mortal sin and still is. I have lots of commentary on issue but will leave just one. Consider too how other so called 'socialist nations' do education as a first thought. As Pogo said long we have met the enemy......

From 'Notebook, A Quibble,' By Mark Slouka

"I was raised to be ashamed of my ignorance, and to try to do something about it if at all possible. I carry that burden to this day, and have successfully passed it on to my children. I don’t believe I have the right to an opinion about something I know nothing about—constitutional law, for example, or sailing—a notion that puts me sadly out of step with a growing majority of my countrymen, many of whom may be unable to tell you anything at all about Islam, say, or socialism, or climate change, except that they hate it, are against it, don’t believe in it. Worse still (or more amusing, depending on the day) are those who can tell you, and then offer up a stew of New Age blather, right-wing rant, and bloggers’ speculation that’s so divorced from actual, demonstrable fact, that’s so not true, as the kids would say, that the mind goes numb with wonder. “Way I see it is,” a man in the Tulsa Motel 6 swimming pool told me last summer, “if English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it’s good enough for us.”

Quite possibly, this belief in our own opinion, regardless of the facts, may be what separates us from the nations of the world, what makes us unique in God’s eyes. The average German or Czech, though possibly no less ignorant than his American counterpart, will probably consider the possibility that someone who has spent his life studying something may have an opinion worth considering. Not the American. Although perfectly willing to recognize expertise in basketball, for example, or refrigerator repair, when it comes to the realm of ideas, all folks (and their opinions) are suddenly equal. Thus evolution is a damned lie, global warming a liberal hoax, and Republicans care about people like you."

it gets down to core beliefs.

Spend your life doing something that will not make one bit of difference, or finding that small niche where you CAN make a difference.

I prefer to not bother with things like Global Warming because i know this old earth can make us all extinct with one shrug of her shoulders. It is totally arrogant to think any one country can make any difference in what the world wants to do. The world will do whatever it wants and does not need our permission.

However, I CAN HELP stop animal cruelty and assist the Disabled American Veterans with my monthly contributions automatically taken out each month.
