    The brutal realities of WW1

    https://www.facinghistory.org/holoca...es-world-war-i

August 1914, both sides expected a quick victory. Neither leaders nor civilians from warring nations were prepared for the length and brutality of the war, which took the lives of millions by its end in 1918. The loss of life was greater than in any previous war in history, in part because militaries were using new technologies, including tanks, airplanes, submarines, machine guns, modern artillery, flamethrowers, and poison gas.

Good article. If you get the chance, watch the movie: 1917

I have been wanting to watch it but am afraid it will be too disturbing. What are your thoughts on that ?

I have not seen it, but have heard it isn't really a war movie. Just a drama that takes place during a war. Which is why I didn't see it.

There is something about the particular brand of brutality in this war that keeps me awake. I was reading there were enough trenches dug to circle the earth. I guess I have a difficult time understanding the brutality of humans

It was a period in military history where defensive technologies were a good bit superior to offensive technologies. That is what caused the trench warfare and extreme casualties.
