Is China's Massive Three Gorges Dam On The Edge Of Failure?

Zerohedge predicts up to a half million deaths. Considering there are 400 million at risk, that would be getting off light if the damn is breached.

The massive flooding taking place in China continues, for some reason, this story has been widely ignored by mainstream media. It is important because China's massive Three Gorges Dam is in peril. If the dam fails there will be a staggering loss of lives and property. The Three Gorges Dam is around one and a half miles long and just over 600 feet tall. About 400 million people live downstream of the dam and apparently, no plans have been made for their evacuation.

Here's to hoping they copied a good design when they stole the plans for this dam from whoever.

But since their copies are always inferior, they are probably $#@!ed.

    Sucks to be a communist.

    Good luck to them.

It would likely have global impacts due to such a large disruption of food chains.

I don't see how, I don't see or buy any food from china at my local grocery store.

Rice is grown in flooded fields anyway, so should not be much of an issue there lol.

If anything, it would lessen the strain on food resources due to lack of mouths to feed.

I have never understood the need to make dams near populated areas, which put many people below them at incredible risk.
This should never be allowed. Dams should only be built upstream of completely unpopulated areas, as they always fail eventually and cause massive destruction when they do.

Hydroelectric power is great, don't get me wrong, but don't build dams upstream of major population areas, kinda common sense.......

Stupid is as stupid does though.

Chi-na will be buying a lot of food to replace their lost production. That will affect global markets.

Maybe so, but if many people die from their failure to care, they may not need to buy that much.

Our farmers sure could use those sales regardless.

"Rumors Of Structural Faults " - China's Three Gorges Dam Could Be Nearing collapse

Concerns are rising that China's Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest dam, could be on the verge of collapse triggering a devastating 250-foot tidal wave that would wipe out cities, reported The Sun.

A major concern, after several weeks of raging floodwaters rushing through the dam at 60,000 cubic meters per second, is that part of the structure has shifted under enormous pressure, potentially jeopardizing the structural integrity of the dam.
Rumors of structural faults in the walls of the 14-year-old dam have grown as heavy rains deluged the swollen Yangtze River.
China's secretive leaders - already facing a backlash over the Covid-19 pandemic which started in Wuhan in Hubei Province - have played down the threat.
But authorities are said to have quietly ordered the evacuation of 38 million Chinese in the threatened zone - equating to more than half the population of the UK.
Heavy rainfall is forecast to continue to pound the Yangtze River basin in the coming days after localized floods claimed at least 141 lives. - The Sun

Dam operators, quoted by local media, said there are two weeks before reservoirs around the dam reach maximum level. Floodgates were used earlier this week to discharge excess water but still not enough to lower water levels.
    But-

China's state-run Global Times quoted a local official that said the structure is "safe and in good condition."
    So everything is OK, right?

There is a Twitter link with a computer model of the damage if the dam goes.
