Or a "RINO", or a "useful idiot", or a "Deep Stater"...the list of silly labels goes on. Once the less cognitively gifted among the self-identified forum conservatives get it into their heads that you're a liberal because you had the audacity to express an opinion they either didn't agree with or didn't understand, you might as well abandon any hope of ever having any kind of honest discussion with them. I probably agree with the self-described conservative contingent here at least 75-80% of the time, but because I think Trump is a dangerous idiot, and because gay and transgender folks don't freak me out, and because I will occasionally play Devil's Advocate and ask a tough question that triggers them because they think I'm trying to pick a fight, I am (and will forever be) labeled a "liberal" - or considerably worse. And as uncomfortable as sharing the "liberal" label with certain individuals out in the world as I am, I would probably be even more uncomfortable - and frequently embarrassed - to call myself a "conservative".

I wouldn't say it's that high for me, but there are numerous issues that most on this board would agree on. Many here don't read. Either due to laziness, or because they don't believe anyone else will check their facts, so they just post nonsense.

There is a glaring difference between having minor disagreements over an issue, and blatant fabrication. Over the years, I've found any board that morphs into an echo chamber is a waste of time. By challenging claims made by others, you are forced to do your research. I guess everyone comes to these places for different reasons.

It's amazing how much you can learn on a message board. Shame that many choose not to take advantage of the opportunity.

True. The same, of course, could be said for all the conservatives going away. (I was perma-banned from a forum called Democrats for Progress for objecting to the characterization of all gun owners as "fat, drunken White guys and barrel stroking perverts". Talk about an echo chamber!) Similarly, if the wish of some of our self-identified conservative forum members was magically granted and all "liberals" were made to disappear from government, the result would be a disaster of epic proportions. Our country depends on a dynamic balance between the two impulses, and always has. On a much smaller scale, I think this forum probably does, too.

When it comes to this forum, my perception is exactly the same when it comes to the board's self-identified conservatives. And if I wanted to devote the time to doing so, I am certain I could cite at least a couple of dozen prime examples of that kind of behavior every day of the year.
