I had no idea that the federal police in Portland (CBP) are allowed to operate there partly because it's within 100 miles of the ocean (border). Within that area, federal police are allowed to conduct searches without a warrant or probable cause. That then means that fourth amendment rights for upwards of 66% of the population are potentially worthless because they/we live within 100 miles of an ocean (or border).

Some efforts have been made to minimize this external boundary area from 100 miles to 25 miles in Congress, but it's still shocking to me that this is even acceptable. Even if the border zone were limited to 25 miles, it would still apply to almost every major city on both coasts. It might be "reasonable" to search someone entering the country through a port of entry, but how can it possibly be constitutionally reasonable to do so to Americans who simply live within 100 miles of the ocean or border? Or, to establish 170 "checkpoints" throughout the country because they fall within 100 miles of the "border" (ocean)?
How is this acceptable?
