Is it immoral to own a piece of Nazi militaria?

At the rate that history is being rewritten, we need to hang onto those things which arouse curiosity in some.
First they provide a direct link to the Truth of History, that if destroyed, severs the link and history disappears.
Some things serve to remind of our greatest failures, but also serves as a guide to correction.
If someone asks, provide a disclaimer.
It sounds like mancave stuff (as someone pointed out). I'm all for it, but some are just as polar opposite.
Of course should someone ask, you can always tell them they are relics from a failed state?

I am not a history buff so my perspective is from an average person.

If you have to ask the question then I think you already know the answer. I agree with Mrs. U. It's telling that you have an uncomfortableness with owning it that you feel you could not display it. What other purpose would you have to own it but to display or resell it. If it's an investment then what type of clientele would you attract? I personally think there is a place for items associated with evil and it's not in someone's home.

A client, a history buff, knows that I am a WWII history buff as well. I am typically always reading a WWII book. I have some period firearms, mostly Allied, though I do have a German Mauser. I don't believe that it has any Nazi markings on it. Years ago, we had two of those monster-size Nazi banners that would've been next to a podium when Hitler or someone spoke. They were captured by my uncle who was in either the 82nd or the Screaming Eagles (He said that was one of the first in Berchestgarden so I think it was the Screaming Eagles) near the end of the war. My aunt insisted that they be sold.

This client has offered me a SA Dagger. Mrs. U thinks it is immoral to own a piece of Nazi anything. I don't know, it is history. What are the thoughts here?

Actually in that particular case what you have is a war trophy. Nothing immoral about that.

I happen to have two German coins from the 1930s with the swastika on it which I just keep as a curio.

My father, his brother and other family members were WW2 vets my father was a disabled ww2 vet and so was my uncle.

Certainly not a real one. I would love to have a battle flag, from either side of the civil war.

I don't think it's immoral: it's a relic of world history. I own a Russian M91-30 (seen in [u]Enemy at the Gate[/i], with the bayonet. On the breach it has the hammer and sickle stamp with the date 1938. I also own an M1 carbine and a 1911 .45. My dad and uncle were in WWII as well. I say keep it. Historians love these things; you ought to see what they have a gun shows.

Immoral?

Just like the confederate statues. Most of us celebrate the statues as historical monuments. A small percentage looked at them as reminders of bad days for their race.
Nazi's were also a significant part of history but I don't think many Jewish people would want to view them. Would you show off your grandfathers Japanese sword to a visitor from Japan? Grandpa told me how he shot the little Jap right in the head...

All of history has winners and losers. The losers are never going to be thrilled with the reminders of the winners. I'm sure that far more Yankees visit Appomattox than Southerners.

Morality is not even a real question of saving and collecting history.
