    Obesity Increases Risk of COVID

A new study from England's Public Health system detailing the increased risk of COVID for overweight individuals.

The evidence is overwhelming. Unless you are on the verge of death inside a nursing home or morbidly obese, you are at virtually no risk from this virus.
Power always thinks it has a great soul, and vast views, beyond the comprehension of the weak. And that it is doing God service when it is violating all His laws.

The "media" won't go with that until after (if) Joe wins. Right now, the facts run counter to their agenda.

That's an interesting study. Unfortunately, it lists up to 40% of Americans as being somewhat obese.

This is something every American can control -- his or her weight. Yes, it takes some effort not to eat that dessert and it takes even more effort to go for a walk rather than park one's butt on the sofa and turn on the TV.

Unfortunately for the country Peter is right, The fact that this is less deadly than Influenza to those under 40 will be hidden until after the election.

If, Biden can use this and the mail in ballots to get elected, then it will go away quickly, but the suffering of the country will have just started.

The Democrats will have NO answers that will work to get people back to work and incentivize new businesses to start to cover those that could not make it through the crisis

They will likely make matters worse with Trade polices and bailouts that will lead to massive inflation

I hope that the people are smart enough to see through this.

The study uses BMI to gauge obesity. That is fine for couch potatoes, but it is a completely useless metric for those who work out. Why? Because it ignores lean muscle mass.

It is another example of why I say that doctors are not educated, but trained. My current medical records list me as obese. In red no less. Yes my doctor can look at the BMI score, and look at me and know that I am not obese. But she has to type obese (in red) because that is what the chart says. My body fat is 17%.

    This is Arnold, not me.

With Arnold’s BMI set at 30.8, this makes him into the obese category! We don’t think he should be signing up for celebrity fat club just yet, as the results are slightly misleading. You see, with a very large muscle mass, it makes the BMI incorrect.

The BMI scale has been around since the 1800’s so maybe someone needs to sit down and have a rethink.

I can see that. They can't use a basic weight vs. height because, as you point out, folks with lean muscle mass will skew towards obese when they're anything but...

Didn't they at one time use a displacement test based on submersion in water? That would be a bit on the scary side, though.

I updated my post after you thanked it.

Yes, they still use a water displacement test- and it is the gold standard for determining body composition. It is only used for specific purposes such as professional body builders who need exact numbers. I have known soldiers in the Army use it when they were being administratively discharged for failure to pass the "Fat Boy" program- the Army uses the tape test which is very inaccurate if you have a skinny neck, but the Army will let you pay for your own water displacement test and accept those numbers.

There are also scales that use electrical impedance, although their reliability is questioned. But so long as their readings are consistent it doesn't really matter if they are perfectly accurate. You can still gauge your fat status (gaining, losing, or staying the same).

    There is also this factor;

Muscle does weigh more than fat because it is a denser product. On average, the density of fat is 0.9g/ml. The density of muscle is 1.1 g/ml. Using the averages, 1 liter of muscle weights 1.06 kg or 2.3 lbs., while 1 liter of fat weights .Jun 3, 2014

Muscles help to shape a strong, healthy body. But when you gain muscle, the number on the scale is likely to increase. ... Muscle is more dense than fat, but it takes up less space. That means if you gain muscle, your scale weight may go up even as you're losing body fat.

Right. That is why BMI is inaccurate for all except couch potatoes.
