NASA to Remove Offensive Names of Cosmic Objects....

Cancel Culture Goes to Space: NASA to Remove Offensive Names of Cosmic Objects

Now that SpaceX is doing all the heavy lifting these days when it comes to actual space exploration, the folks at NASA are busying themselves with renaming celestial objects that social justice warriors may find offensive.

"NASA is examining its use of unofficial terminology for cosmic objects as part of its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion," the agency said in a news release this past week.
Under the new rules, the agency says it will cease the use of nicknames when it comes to cosmic objects and instead refer to such objects exclusively by their scientific designations, such as "NGC 2392" in reference to the Eskimo Nebula, and NGC 4567 and 4568 in reference to the Siamese Twins Galaxy. The agency will work with so-called diversity, inclusion, and equity experts to provide guidance and make recommendations for other nicknames subject to review......snip~

Yep now NASA has been suckered into the Cancel Culture. I guess we can expect them to rename a White Dwarf Star, huh?

Don't worry Leftists they will Leave the Black Hole alone.

It is disappointing to see institutions bending the knee.

They've been doing it with the 'search for life on other planets' thing for decades. They KNOW there is no life out there but they hawk that periodically as a fundraiser.

But there is life out there.

I doubt it is woke. So stay frosty.

On who's authority are they doing this? Is this based on scientific investigation that it will somehow make a difference, or are they just cow-towing to the communist BLM/antifa screamers?

I would guess that there is absolutely no valid basis for any of it, just as there was no valid basis for destroying statues.

It's disgusting and shameful, and very unAmerican.

Gee, NGC 2392 does look like the Eskimo nebula (also called the clown face nebula), I have seen it in my 17.5" F4.5 and 25" F5 Telescopes I used to own. Now I have the 18" F4.5 To see it well this fall.

There are many names of deep sky objects, here are few:

Swan Nebula, Lagoon nebula, Checkmark nebula, Trifid nebula, blinking planetary, cocoon galaxy, Back eye galaxy, Sombrero galaxy, Pacman nebula, Dumbell planetary, Ring planetary, Spindle galaxy, Whirlpool galaxy, Rosette nebula, Christmas tree nebula, Cone nebula, Bug nebula, Crescent nebula, Bubble nebula, Owl planetary, North American nebula, California nebula, Horsehead, and many more.

Seen them all in the big Telescopes.

I had a 10in Dobsonian when I lived in Tennessee and took great delight in finding as many of this objects as I could. So what if NASA changes the name. Are these going to rewrite all the Deep Space guide books on the market?

Note that The Eskimo Nebular is also listed as a "bipolar" nebular. Does that mean we can't say bad things about it because it has a medical condition?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NGC_2392

Here is a better photo of the object.

BTW, as any astronomer will tell you the object does not appear in the telescope as it does in this photo. Everything you see through any telescope is in shades of gray. The color comes from fliters and "stacking" of photos. This might represent 50 or more actual photographs.

I am so sick of this PC Bull S#%t.....

I can't believe the Redskins finally caved into the pressure of the few. Now on the radio, they are made at them for not picking a new mascot. I think that the should keep the name the Washington Football Team Keep everything the same with one exception. Change the Brave Warrior to a football but keep the feather. Are great way to say up yours to the PC police

Just change the warrior to a football, and I would use the college one with the white stripes.
