US military to sell off some 5-G to commercial use.

The military owns a lot of 5-G in the US.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon plans to free up a big chunk of its military airwaves in the U.S. for high-speed internet service, part of a broader push to get ahead of China in the deployment of 5G wireless technology.

The Trump administration announced Monday that it has identified radio spectrum used for radar defense systems that can be shared with commercial telecommunications providers without compromising national security.

... A June report by the Congressional Research Service said there aren’t as many frequencies available for 5G technology in the U.S. compared to other countries because the American military holds so much of the usable spectrum. Much of the investment in the U.S. has centered around the higher-frequency “millimeter wave” spectrum that offers fast data speeds but won’t likely work as well outside urban areas. That’s in contrast to China, which has been investing in building out networks using the less-expensive lower and middle bands.

    "Get ahead of China"?

It isn't clear how we compare to China, which is elsewhere said to be lagging in 5-G deployment. Who knows?

China has been racing ahead with its 5G rollout as it considers the next-generation of mobile technology to be a significant strategic priority for the country. Leading the pack for 5G means being able to shape and take advantage of the innovations it can power, from new consumer apps to smart cities, autonomous vehicles and a huge extension of the Internet of Things. China will account for nearly half of all spending on 5G infrastructure this year. https://www.zdnet.com/article/5g-sma...ely-rocketing/

When I read anything about 5G, I think "race to oblivion" or "you will obey", but never faster internet, which is almost a non-issue except for mobile phone time lag. But that's just me.

    The US Military?
Verizon: We will give you 1 billion for everything.
U.S. Military: But we paid over a trillion for it!
