Thumbs up Obama Urges "Bold" Nuclear Cuts In Berlin Speech

First of all, let me give the definition of "bold" so that everyone here is on the same page:

    Adjective
(of a person, action, or idea) Showing an ability to take risks; confident and courageous.
    Then, from: http://www.newsday.com/news/nation/o...eech-1.5518496

BERLIN - Summoning the harsh history of this once-divided city, President Barack Obama on Wednesday cautioned the U.S. and Europe against "complacency" brought on by peace, pledging to cut America's deployed nuclear weapons by one-third if Cold War foe Russia does the same.

Speaking against the soaring backdrop of the Brandenburg Gate, Obama said that "bold reductions" to the U.S. and Russian nuclear forces were needed to move the two powers away from the war posture that continues to seed mistrust between their governments.

"We may not live in fear of nuclear annihilation, but as long as nuclear weapons exist, we are not truly safe," Obama said as he closed a three-day visit to Europe, his first trip to the continent since winning re-election.
So we have a president who wants to cut our nukes in a manner that even he knows is risky.

Can someone please tell me why this would ever be a good idea?

I don't think anyone should have nuclear weapons. But we don't like in utopia.

Pragmatically, I know the US should have them and should have the most unless countries like Russia are willing to get rid of their supplies and prove it. It's wreckless to assume that countries would actually destroy any of their nukes and that they'd be honest about their stockpiles.

There are rumors that we have developed weapons that would be as strategically important as nukes, without the long-term environmental impact- or the massive over kill of civilians. But of course so long as those programs are secret they don't have a deterrent affect, nor do they ease the pubic anxiety over a US unilateral nuke disarmament.

I think nuclear weapons kept us from a land war with the USSR for decades. It's hard for politicians to start a war when they know they and theirs will be in it.

That said, I'm sure we're about to find out what President Obama meant when he said he would be more flexible after the election.
