Online training. This is basically reinforcement learning -- a kind of machine learning similar to human reinforcement learning. This fine tunes the models created offline. Offline models are designed to reduce error, while online models are designed to maximize reward (goal attainment) and build a policy. A policy is like a bunch of rules for how to get from A to B, but generalized enough to possibly help you to get from C to D. 99% of the processing is just object detection, though; most of the training was done on a computer rather than on the road. This is the 'fun' part of machine learning because the real world is so 'noisy' and unpredictable.

As for tens of thousands dying in daily carnage .. since auto safety measures kicked in, deaths are way down.

You are now more likely to die as a result of gunfire

30k people is still many people who are dying what will hopefully be preventable deaths. The ripple effect of this technology is potentially astounding. Even from an insurance perspective, how many poor people own cars in America? Alot, and they pay insurance, and if this works, that expense will decrease dramatically. How many single parents struggle with juggling kids and job. Self driving cars are a potential solution there as well. Indeed, driving as leisure does exist, but alot of driving is laborious and this will take that burden off of them.

38,000 in 2015. Colorado had over 600 fatalities in 2016. They said that fully half of the people who died weren't wearing seat belts!! If self driving cars cut the national number down to 6,000 to 10,000 it would be better than now. That number would go down as technology improved just like airliner deaths have fallen over the years. We still have deaths associated with air travel and if we had waited til there was a foolproof death proof system we wouldn't be flying at all.

Self driving cars would be programmed to go where you tell them to go so the chances you would fall asleep and end up in Florida are pretty slim. There probably will be instances where the system could fail and whatever backups in place could fail and the car won't stop. Just like now where we get an occasional horrifying instance of "runaway" cars.

The daddy in me loves it to. If this works, eventually it'll just be how its done. I'll tell my grandkids how we used to drive cars everywhere and they'll just look at me funny.

Lol, it's not Jersey - this is Jersey - one of the British Isles - like Guernsey, and the Isle of Man -

I think you mean New Jersey.
Oh, I wish I were a glow worm,
for a glow worm's never glum,
'cause how can you be grumpy
when the sun shines out your bum!
