Surveillance critics face Obama in Oval Office

    http://news.yahoo.com/surveillance-c...234633724.html

In defense of government surveillance of citizens, people will tell me that if I am doing nothing wrong, I have nothing to worry about. My response: If I am doing nothing wrong, why would the government be spying on me? Just sayin'.

The surveillance program and wasteful and excessive law enforcement arrangement in the United States is pathetic from an outsider's perspective. They can't seem to catch a terrorist until after they've tried or successfully committed an act of terrorism. They can't seem to control the 'war on drugs'. They have absolutely no handle on illegal weapons.

Train your state-level police better, train municipal police forces better and slim down federal agencies. We only have the RCMP and CSIS and they actually catch terrorists before they commit acts of terrorism, and provincial or municipal police are often involved or entirely responsible for the investigations. Provincial and municipal police forces also do a vast majority of the drug busts, save for the rural areas where the RCMP are stationed, (in addition to being the federal police agency, they are responsible for remote areas of Canada where our police forces don't cover - it's often where they send the newbs). People make fun of our RCMP but it's one of the best police forces in the world.

The United States has a lot of work to do. Surveillance isn't working. Law enforcement agencies that are bloated, both with staff and with budgets that far exceed what should be necessary. Majority of law enforcement responsibilities should be handed to state-level police forces (and give them specialized training). Cut back on the surveillance programs.
