Another example is game engines, which were a big thing going back years ago. The engine for Quake was unique and the best there ever was, it was patented so no one could steal it and they reigned for a number of years.

I am not an expert either but was thinking the same. Maybe we are thinking about something else. I don't get how a patent is not important.
