I'm in El Norte, RIGHT on the borderS of Greater Appalachia AND Deep South.
i live in the greater appalachia...and that is pretty much spot on....one thing that boggles the mind about small towns....sure everyone knows what everyone knows....but who you tell is the secret to survival...
a lady was having an affair...flat out not hiding it at all....everyone knew....it is just not everyday a big real estate broker....good catholic...loses 50 lbs and begins wearing leather mini skirts and $#@!ing the plumber....but that is what was going on....you would either see her lunching with her husband of 30 plus years....or her boyfriend....never knew which one she would be with.....sooooooooooooo entire town is a buzzing...but then the talk dies down and the maypies move on to someone else....no harm done.....o wait wait....a local busy body...decides to call her husband and tell him what is going on......his reply...."if it doesnt bother me..why does it bother you"?
my neighbor knows who comes and goes....he could tell you pretty much everything that happens...who comes and goes...etc....he likes having a house on the hill so he can see down on everyone else....but he never says a word to anyone about it...i just think of him as my plan b...if anything goes wrong...he will be the first to know it and be here....
A lie ain’t a side of the story. It’s just a lie.

I am a full blown Appalachian American. And no we don't like "Flatlander Touristers".
Another issue is that everyone is related to everyone else by birth or marriage, especially in small towns. I live in a community of about 900 people. There are five major families and one never ever speaks ill of anyone else since they are probably related to the people you are speaking to. As far as knowing the comings and goings the major technologies up here is Tellahillbilly.
I'm where ever I want to be, just a Airline Ticket away.
Just got back from the Left Coast, will be going to the other corner is couple weeks.
I understand, that Dinosaurs can't move that fast.
