It's Philadelphia. Few people carry guns. Cops, gangbangers, and diamond merchants for the most part. Yeah, if one of those kids had been felled immediately I think they all would have scattered assuming beating an old man was done for kicks and he was not targeted for some other reason.

Certainly, and I'll grant there is likely a degree of desensitization in today's youth as a result.

Violence is present in our psyche. I guess part of the problem is the way we channel it or don't. I'm not big on the sociology of it but isn't it odd how much more violent societies (Nazi Germany, for example) did not have this problem? Do we turn violence into entertainment? Just talking out of my ass here.

Few people pull a gun to use it. Most (stupidly) pull the gun in hopes that it will change the situation - which generally tends to escalate the violence.

They always say don't pull it unless you're going to use it.

Yes, old Jewish men were set upon by gangs of youths in Jewish cities. They often cut their beards or merely beat them. Yes it was the state will, but that does not change the violence.

That's just it though. This is an example of the human propensity for violence being controlled and channeled in a particular way by a regime. That violence was sanctioned and abetted by the state. I'd go as far as to say that it wouldn't have happened without the state's complicity. In so far as that's true, it's a different animal. I seriously doubt mobs of German children ran amok attacking who they pleased for kicks.
