    Meanwhile, in the real world...

While your evening news program, sponsored by Cialis, is consumed by the latest 'gate' scandal, or who might be a candidate for an election 2 years away, there's a revolution going on in the Ukraine and Egypt, war spreading from Syria to Anbar, loss of authoritarian control in Turkey, suicide bombers in Russia, currency unraveling in Argentina, failure of quasi-capitalism in China, super-germs in India, worst week in US equities indexes since 2011, continued waning in emerging markets, historic drought in California (a top 10 world economy by itself), Polar Vortex in the East and Mid-West, heat waves down under, continued leaking in Fukushima, Iran on the verge of nukes, bloodbaths in Africa, battle of the militias in Libya, the rise of nationalism and Islam in the EU, and the robots are coming.

Other than that, I think we're good.

Yeah, but we Americans have to deal with the really important stuff, like who's gonna win the next American Idol??
Democrats believe that "politics is war by other means." And they are at war with America, with common sense and even common decency. Those who would mount an effective opposition had better have a high tolerance for slime, slander and abuse.

Most news sources and agencies have to worry about ratings, so they have to worry about entertaining their audience. Ratings drive content, content doesn't drive ratings.

I think there's an element of supply-side push polling when it comes to content. If you dwell on a story long enough, and keep emphasizing its importance, eventually a majority of people will become convinced that the story is important. Of course, networks do a lot of market research to see what's trending on the demand side of the equation. But, there's also a big push on the supply side. Sort of like the "if you build it, they will come", it's like; "If you report it, they will listen" type of thing, and that becomes 'the news'.
