A draft based army is an army of older tech and attrition. That is not the way the US will fight its wars in the future.

A standing Army can present problems to the citizenry. As the late great Elbridge Gerry once said, a standing army is like a standing member, while it insures domestic tranquility it offers a temptation for foreign adventure.

We should rid ourselves of the Army and the Air Force leaving the various state militias and the Navy and Coast Guard to protect us as needed (keep in mind the Marine Corp despite their other short comings are in fact part of the United States Navy)

This is the 21st century, not the 18th.

Exactly, and the Navy and Marine Corp can provide enough firepower to handle almost any situation until the state militias can be called up. The Navy and Marines are always first strike now. Why spend the billions for the rest to just sit around waiting for something to happen?

You may see the services morphed into one, like Canada did.

That would cut down on the duplication. The only real reason we need a zillion man military is because we are trying to be the policeman of the world. Perhaps if we said to all those countries we are trying to protect from themselves, hey, do it yourself, we would be a lot better off.

I agree with that. We should only use overt military force to advance national security interests (balancing act). No world police stuff.

Now, to play Devils Advocate, what about if Al Queda begins to make inroads into Europe or South America and we suddenly find ourselves surrounded by hostiles. Would we have been better off if we had acted to stop them from making those inroads in the first place?

Now you know why I am not a military strategist!!

Were we able to keep al Qaeda and its affiliates out of Iraq and Afghanistan forever?
