"Ukraine in NATO has been a red line," Lukyanov said. "If that happens, various options will come under consideration, including appeal to certain parts of Ukraine, including the Crimea."
Putin has a lot of options before having to invade assist the pro-Russian Ukrainian patriots in Ukraine against terrorists.

It will be interesting to see whether there will be a formal request by the pro-Russian Crimea to secede from the Ukraine or whether the people of the region will simply try to emigrate to the Russian Federation.

True. If the Ukrainians enter over a civil war regarding secession, the Russians will certainly jump in to assist the "Crimean patriots".

Should the most extreme measures be used in this crisis by the Russian military, the legal authority to do so rests with the appeal of the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea to Yanukovych that was presented by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of Crimea to the President urging him to take extraordinary measures to preserve the constitutional order and unity in Ukraine, and which Putin is bound to support by treaty.
    http://www.whatdoesitmean.com/index1742.htm

all of these “initial” troops being mobilized for the defense of Crimea are already stationed “in country” as part of the nearly 26,000 Russian forces which comprise the Black Sea Fleet headquartered in the special status city of Sevastopol, and as noted by one Crimean organizer, “There isn’t even any need for Russia to invade, they are already right here.”

Important to note, is that top Putin advisor with responsibility for relations with Ukraine, Sergei Glazyev, had previously warned the Obama regime that US “interference” breached the 1994 treaty under which Washington and Moscow jointly guaranteed Ukraine's security and sovereignty after Kiev gave up its Soviet-era nuclear arsenal.
Even more critical to note, this report continues, is Russia’s obligation to abide by the terms of the 1774 Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca signed between the Russian and Ottoman Empires which saw the Crimea formally annexed into the Russian Empire in 1783.

... Jewish synagogues have been firebombed, Russian historical monuments destroyed, top Jewish leaders attacked, and how over 15,000 Neo-Nazis wearing the uniform of a Ukrainian division of the German army during World War II chanting “Ukraine above all!” and “Bandera, come and bring order!” began their fascist siege against the pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych on 15 January, and who the Obama regime unilaterally declared yesterday “is no longer the leader of Ukraine.”
The fascists now controlling Ukraine, it should be noted, are cult-followers of one of the German Nazi regimes main allies in World War II, the Ukrainian independence revolutionary leader Stepan Bandera who was responsible for the deaths of millions of Russians and Ukrainian Jews.
This MoD report further states that the fascist leaders in Ukraine have increased their actions against their own Russian citizens by passing a law banning the speaking of the Russian language, and proposing a new law banning all Russian news from their country, a move Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn has condemned.

Ukraine’s revolutionaries are violent, western-backed ultra-nationalists who intend to crush the rights of Russian-speakers and curtail Crimea’s links with Russia itself, this report further warns, one of the greatest immediate threats is to the economy of Ukraine, which is currently experiencing a money crisis which has seen a 30 billion Hyrvnia loss (over $3 billion) in just 2 days for their banks.
As Russia has warned that Ukraine is nearly in default on its loans, which Russian banks will be able to easily absorb, this MoD report notes that natural gas supplies to Ukraine may be needed to be cut off to prevent further losses due to the total collapse of Ukraine’s currency.

I think that Russia might think twice about cutting off the natural gas supply to the Ukraine, especially during winter. The specter of Ukrainian citizens dying of the cold, being attributed to the Russian Federation would only serve to build animus among western nations against Russia. Russia's best strategy would be to appear to be the hero, rather than the zero.

I believe that the Russians, the Crimeans and the rest of the Ukraine are well aware of the gamble possible to take.

I hope the outcome is of peace and with no troops involved.

Russia is not going to invade Ukraine. Putin is a very wise man and he knows about unwanted consequences. He just is preparing military in case of conflict that might affect Russian boundaries like Belgorod and Rostov regions that border east Ukraine.
However, Crimea might go back to Russia as it came to Ukrainian SSR in 1956 by Khrushev. But it sounds unlikely.

Very easy. Border city Kharkiv, Ukraine (second large Ukrainian city after Kiev) bordered with Belgorod region, Russia. It is 30 min ride from Kharkiv to Belgorod by a commuter train.

That is a good suggestion. Love your enemies.

What if they are God's enemies?
