Large Step Toward Baldness Cure Discovered

A biological clue to male baldness has been discovered, raising the prospect of a treatment to stop or even reverse thinning hair.

In studies of bald men and laboratory mice, US scientists pinpointed a protein that triggers hair loss.

Drugs that target the pathway are already in development, they report in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The research could lead to a cream to treat baldness.

Most men start to go bald in middle age, with about 80% of men having some hair loss by the age of 70.

The male sex hormone testosterone plays a key role, as do genetic factors. They cause the hair follicles to shrink, eventually becoming so small that they are invisible, leading to the appearance of baldness.

Oh, this would be awesome. I didn't realize I still have hair follicles, they're just "invisibile".

Really? I thought the hairs just fell out and the follicles disappeared.

Well, I'm just going off the article...if the process really could be reversed by blocking this protein, that would be pretty sweet. You'd probably see a big spike in divorces and viagra use - recaptured youth.

Sure. If it wasn't too expensive I'd do it. I have to admit though that I really don't care about thinning hair. On the other hand, if it's an easy process why not?

Yeah, it would have to be inexpensive and easy. I tried Rogaine foam once. It was expensive and uncomfortable, so I didn't use it. It actually made the skin on my scalp peel - not painful, but kind of like after a sunburn, you know? It was disgusting.

Back around 1998 or 1999 I used the Rogaine spray. It was messy and a pain in the arse. Not to mention it costs around $30 plus a month. Forget it.

No one envies your greasy Italian mane. Or your dago mustache.

Uh, not sure how it works in your house, but it's the women who are supposed to have long hair. How do you think cavemen dragged them back to their bedrooms?
