    Over-engineering

I've been saying this all along, we over-engineer things to death. Here's a great example. I've had my Mach 3 razor probably now going on 15 years maybe.

It works, no improvements needed. I blame this $#@! on the gullible people who will buy into anything, they're $#@!ing it up for the rest of us.

Gillette’s New Razor Is Everything That’s Wrong With American Innovation

    http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer...h-america.html

The Wall Street Journal obtained the marketing materials for Gillette's new razor, the ProGlide FlexBall. It's a men's razor that does what every other men's razor since time immemorial has done – removes hair from your face – but with "a swiveling ball-hinge" that the company says will make it easier to get a clean shave. It will retail for $11.49 and $12.59, depending on whether you want the battery-powered version or not, and Gillette is planning to sell $188 million worth of the things in the next year alone.

I won't mince words: ProGlide FlexBall is a bad idea. A really bad idea. In fact, the razor represents everything terrible about America's innovation economy.

I got a Schick 5 as a gift. It felt fantastic but those cartridges are way too expensive, I'd rather save my money and use the little disposable orange razors.

    Yeah, they're all expensive.

The local grocery store just puts tags out on the shelf, apparently there's a black market for shoplifting these things, you have to pick them up at the cash register.

I'm like "so where do they sell these black market cartridges"...

Seriously? You have to ask for razor cartridges? That's hilarious.

Yeah, I'm not making that up. It sounds like it is though.

The Mach 3 cartridges are like $15 for 5 or so of them. I tried using the 3 bladed disposables and they do an ok job, but not nearly as good as the Mach 3. I keep a bunch of disposables handy for traveling or whatnot.

I got that one back when for free. Just like small printers, they give you the unit for free and get you on the cartridges.

I had a Schick 5 blade somewhere, got that one for free also. It did ok but I didn't like the head shape, it tended to let the goop run off onto your chest while shaving.

There's a Cleveland Steamer joke in there somewhere, I know.

I have a Wilkinson Sword. Good razor, nice blades, I've had it going on four years now. Blades are cheap to replace.

But, yes, American "innovation" these days is a joke.

Those disposables I have are Wilkinson, they're not bad but I do get nicked every now and then with them.

Don't get that with the Mach 3.

Now... here's a discussion point. I started shaving in the shower a couple years ago and it works great. I'm a simple guy, I use Dial soap for everything - cleaning, shampoo and lather for shaving. It didn't take long to get used to shaving without a mirror and it's way easier feeling around for the spots I missed.

I've thought about it, but I have no sense of coordination.

I only shave in the shower. It's easy to tell where my goatee is so I don't ever have a problem with shaving it off.

I'm a mustache guy, had one since high school (buying booze thing). Wife got me this electric trimmer thing that works great but it has this adjustable head thing.

Did this twice - last time this past Thursday. I'm in the dark sort of near a mirror, going to trim the stache. Half asleep I pull the adjustable head thing off thinking it's a cap and start trimming.

Yeah, so now I have the whole hitler thing going. Wife's like 'what the $#@!...'
