I have found that "country" means different things to different people. Where I grew up we were the only house on our road and then acres and acres of farmland. Then, we got a neighbor on the other side of the ditch. Now there are 3 more houses on our road. We are still separate by acres and acres, but it is still too close.

Cthulhu and I live rural, but we live in a town of 1000 people. We live "in" town. To me, that is not country. Country is miles and space and no close neighbors. That is my ideal. At least 30 min from the city.

I have the best of both worlds. I live in the city limits of a small town and less than 10 minutes to doctors, stores, etc. with Interstate access to a larger city. My backyard stops at a bayou with the property on the other side designated as Forever Wild (continuing for hundreds of acres of river wetlands). I tried to sit on the back porch tonight but the sound of the tree frogs is so loud you can't hear yourself think. My husband's live animal trap in the front yard seems to have captured Mr Raccoon #24.

I spent this afternoon cleaning a couple dozen blue crabs and 10 lbs of shrimp. We are getting ready for a seafood boil tomorrow...sausages, red potatoes & Silver King corn ready for the pot, beer in the fridge on the porch.

We are expecting family from out of town and for a few days we will spend lots of time sitting on the screened in porch, under the ceiling fans, telling stories and laughing...and eating a lot.

    I'm a rich woman...

My idea of country is no immediate neighbors as well, or at least so I can't really see another house. I just want to see nature, trees and open spaces.

Thoroughly agreed @Dr. Who. We can see the northern lights here in the winter. It's pretty awesome.

It's worth it. Even if all you did is go to Glacier National Park. Blows Yellowstone out of the park.

I did like Yellowstone. My ex- Mother in law got married there. It was really cool.
