LONDON (AP) — A wave of violence and looting raged across London and spread to three other major British cities on Tuesday, as authorities struggled to contain the country's worst unrest since race riots set the capital ablaze in the 1980s.

Police called in hundreds of reinforcements — and made a rare decision to deploy armored vehicles in some of the worst-hit districts — but still struggled to keep pace with the chaos unfolding at flashpoints across London, in the central city of Birmingham, the western city of Bristol and the northwestern city of Liverpool.

The riots appeared to have little unifying cause — though some involved in the violence claimed to oppose sharp government spending cuts, which will slash welfare payments and cut tens of thousands of public sector jobs through 2015.

Others appeared attracted simply by the opportunity for violence. "Come join the fun," shouted one youth, racing along a street in the east London suburb of Hackney, where shops were attacked and cars torched.

Prime Minister David Cameron reversed an earlier decision and cut short his summer vacation in Italy, heading home for a meeting of the national crisis committee on Tuesday morning.

WTF how can they claim this is like the Tea Party In the US??? Stating they compare it to right-wing activsm. The US has the TEA-party and they have this. What a joke.....how about England using all those cameras to go after those that were leading the way.
Sounds to me like they are saying it's the opposite of the tea party at least in terms of motivation. As per the OP: "though some involved in the violence claimed to oppose sharp government spending cuts, which will slash welfare payments and cut tens of thousands of public sector jobs through 2015". I agree that this is just hooliganism.

.LONDON (AP) — Police arrested 160 people during a weekend of riots and looting that erupted in a disadvantaged London neighborhood just five miles (eight kilometers) from the site of next year's Olympic Games.

Groups of masked and hooded young people looted shops, attacked police officers and set fire to vehicles in violence that has raised questions about security ahead of the 2012 Olympics and revealed pent-up anger against the city's police.

I saw footage of this earlier.....they had fires all over the place. buisnesses destroyed and they really tore up that neighborhood. Going after the cops. Did they say how many were injured?
    Sounds familiar, no?

The article mentions that 35 policemen were injured but says nothing about the "youths".
What should they be called instead of youths? Seems like most people who destroy property are young punks, but then again I'm an old $#@! who hates the younger generations. ;D
These riots have a strongly racial character to them. Granted, I'm sure lily white teenager anarchists are also taking to the streets in their ninja masks... :

Now I see what MMC was talking about. Get this: "Phillips claimed rioters were motivated by distrust of the police, and drew a link between the rage on London's street and insurgent right-wing politics in the United States. "In America you have the tea party, in England you've got this," he said".

Puleeeese. This Mr. Phillips is obviously ignorant of the American tea parties none of which, as far as I know, have formed mobs and rioted.

Yeah D.....thats exactly what I was talking about. This goes on all over Europe. They always try to make some sort of comparison to us. Thing is the UK was one of the First Countries that started all the Invasion of Privacy legislation for their Country. Which is why they were the first to put Cameras up in Public Areas as a deterrent to Crime. They always look to blame us in some sort of way.

Looks like they will be cracking down.

    http://news.yahoo.com/uk-cop-says-pl...130838886.html

A senior London police officers says it is possible that U.K. authorities will use plastic bullets to quell rioting.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen Kavanagh said Tuesday such bullets are "one of tactics" being considered. Plastic bullets have never been used before during British disturbances.

Re: Police arrest over 160 in weekend London riots

Yeah even when they had the blackout in New York they were about looting buisnesses, not starting all kinds of fires.....the only reason they did not compare it to the Arab uprisings is due to the Sunni Muslims they have in their country. IMO that is!

Wow plastic bullets huh.....why not use water hoses and put out the fires at the same time.

To me that quote comparing the tea party sounded like it was comparing the anger of both movements. So, basically bull$#@!.

Like I said, I have no doubt that some native Britons joined the fray but the riots started over a racially tinged incident involving the police. That's exactly what happened in France too.
