    Julius Caesar in Britain

    Julius Caesar in Britain

In the late summer of 55 BC Julius Caesar stood on the north coast of France and looked out over the Channel. Some 30 miles across the water lay an island, which, according to travellers' tales was rich in pearls, lead, gold, and tin, but Caesar's interest in Britain was dictated not so much by a desire to exploit her mineral wealth as by the strategic position of the island. He could clearly see that Britain posed a backdoor threat to his latest and greatest conquest (France) whose subjugation Caesar had now enforced after eight years' hard campaigning. During those years the Celts of Britain had aided their Gallic kinsmen against Caesar and he judged that until Britain was his, the north coast of France would always be vulnerable to surprise attack.

I always loved reading his commentary on the Britons.
And if we should die tonight
Then we should all die together
Raise a glass of wine for the last time
Calling out father, prepare as we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on the mountain side
    Desolation comes upon the sky..

I have his Commentaries. And another book that explains them: Caesar Against the Celts.

    They should be read together.

Mine, too! It is the most romantic city in the world, it really is. I love everything about it.

And for any women on here that may wish to go to Rome, the Gladiatore cafe by the Colosseum is standard (good) Roman food, but there is a guy who works there named "Luca" who looks just like Henry Cavill as Superman.

All Caesar wanted was to get away from this inhospitable island, from its abominable weather, and its cunning inhabitants.

Don't let the door hit ya where the dog should'a bit ya.
Power always thinks it has a great soul, and vast views, beyond the comprehension of the weak. And that it is doing God service when it is violating all His laws.

Yes, he had much disdain and respect for the Britons. It is too bad that they've stopped being so "British". I have mixed feelings on multiculturalism being an immigrant. I like things to stay as they are. All it really does is blur the picture instead of allowing distinct flavors.

    Boudicca, Celtic warrior queen.
We know the history of Boudicca through two writers: Tacitus, in "Agricola" (98 CE) and "The Annals" (109 CE), and Dio, in "The Rebellion of Boudicca" (about 163 CE).
