    A Decade of War—for What?

"My fellow Americans, we have traveled through more than a decade under the dark cloud of war," said Barack Obama from Bagram Air Base.
"Here in the predawn darkness, we can see the light of a new day on the horizon. The Iraq War is over. The number of troops in harm's way has been cut in half, and more will be coming home. ... The time of war began in Afghanistan, and this is where it will end."
    Interesting comment, that last.
If "the time of war" is at an end, does that rule out U.S. military action in Syria or war on Iran?
Setting aside the 14,000-mile round trip to Afghanistan to do an end zone dance on the anniversary of Seal Team Six's dispatch of Osama bin Laden, Obama seems to have boxed in his Republican rivals.
His assurance that our wars are ending and our troops are coming home reflects the national will. And his partnership agreement with President Hamid Karzai and pledge that a U.S. force will remain to train the Afghan army and prevent al-Qaida's return inoculates him against the charge that he is cutting and running.
Yet The New York Times was disappointed.

Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

Shady business Mister D, you've linked a donation page to another site.

I'm not above giving you the benefit of doubt that that was your intent, that said - it doesn't matter either way, it's still shady.

Now that that's over with; I doubt the Taliban would ever be able to regain control over Afghanistan even after we've left.

I guess it'll be tough to ever know for sure because at the rate things are going we'll never leave. It's hard to even imagine what the landscape will be like in 2024 when the agreement runs out. Here's a guess though, life will still suck over there.

I was there from late 2001 to mid 2002 then back again from late 2002 to the beginning of 2003, even in that short span of time I witnessed a sort of transformation, the general populace doesn't want 'em around, that and Karzai (both Hamid and Ahmed) are both cordial with Pakistan, enough that even though Pakistan's ISI may want 'em both dead (it's believed they've unsuccessfully attempted to assassinate 'em), the other side of that coin is the Karzai's know their way around the rest of Pakistan's government. That and Ahmed controls all sorts of underhanded mafia like paramilitary forces with all sorts of ties to the heroin trade - it'd be the same as John Gotti running the mob while John Gotti's brother was the President of the United States with less oversight from Congress or any other facet of the Federal government.

That and the average every day hooked on khat lazy as $#@! all Afghani despises the Taliban.

Now the link works just fine - that donation page didn't have a way out without donating is all I'm trying to say Mister D.

It's really not that big of a deal, I thought it was funny more than anything else.

You know the red "X" in the top right corner? If all else fails (e.g. typing in a new address, selecting a favorite, etc.) the red "X" will get you out safely. Yeah, this is pretty funny.

I did have to employ the dreaded red "X."
