I read all the posts. Don't you people like Patton?

Name a General you like to talk about most?
I like Patton a lot. My adopted grandfather served with Patton and was interviewed for a documentary about Patton on the Military History Channel.

As for a general I like to talk about the most...I'd have to go with Robert E. Lee.

I think that Lee was overrated. But perhaps he just had incompetent generals under him (for the most part, some were great).

I think it was the latter.

Robert E. Lee honed defense to a fine art and was extremely interested in keeping down his casualty rates. He was outstanding at knowing the moves of his opponent prior to his opponents attacks.

Patton was not defensive. He was very offensive. To the point he ran out of fuel. He ripped senior Generals for stopping at a river's edge. He ordered crossing the river immediately. He would lead from the front.

Fortunately the north had an abundance of such types of command.

The north didn't see a decent general until Grant. I would not call that lack of generalship fortunate.
