I seldom see myth #1 addressed. The British army, while disciplined and professional, was tiny. It rarely operated alone on the continent. It was far too small.
Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

I hate that Thonas Paine is all but ignored when discussing the Revolution.
"Those who produce should have, but we know that those who produce the most — that is, those who work hardest, and at the most difficult and most menial tasks, have the least."

It was my understanding that the British actually gave up more than they lost. They were spread thin because of wars in Europe and the logistics of supporting an army 3000 miles from home was overwhelming.

I also heard that support was one third, one third, one third. One third of the people wanted to split from England, one third didn't and one third didn't give a $#@! one way or the other.

I guess I should have read the link BEFORE I posted this.

Yes, French and Spanish involvement made the American Revolution a wider European war. It also made the British prioritize. The American colonies were much less important than the Caribbean colonies, for example.

Yes, I think 1/3 is about right.

I was actually fortunate that my history book gave a more historical account on the Revolutionary War than the history books I came across in public school. While it wasn't completely perfect ( because let's be honest, the winners write history the way they want it to be remembered...along with a few embellished morsals thrown in for good measure), I did get a better idea of what really happened such as Patriots and Loyalists being more equal in numbers.
