    The Battle of Hastings

    The Battle of Hastings

    One of the most important battles in history. It changed the world.

    It all began with the death of Edward the Confessor, in January 1066. The Bayeux tapestry depicts Edward on his deathbed, offering the English crown to Harold, and this event is reflected in most of the chronicles of the time.
    ***

    The body of Harold was eventually recovered after a long search, but its face was so badly disfigured that they had to bring it to his concubine, Edith Swan-neck, to identify by the intimate marks upon his body. Initially, William had the body buried next to the battlefield, with a headstone reading, 'Here lies Harold, King of the English', but after Harold's name was blackened by later Norman propaganda, the headstone was removed, and the body was disinterred and taken to Harold's abbey at Waltham.

    I often hear it said that it demonstrated the superiority of cavalry over infantry but I just don't see it. The Saxon shield wall remained unbroken throughout a long day of fighting. When Harold was killed the formation started to fall apart. Granted, the details of the actual fighting are sketchy (when aren't they?) and the shield wall may have started to crack earlier but it appears that the battle lasted for the better part of daylight. Harold picked an excellent position that prevented the Norman cavalry from turning his flanks. It's a questionable conclusion, IMO.

    The shield wall was fine. It was a lack of discipline when the formation broke to chase what it thought was a retreating enemy- without orders. I saw that in real life and the consequences (not a shield wall but a modern infantry tactic). Dead Americans. Needless.

    Yes, there were two incidents of that in the records although the first was likely a genuine retreat.

    True. But the troops on the line ought not jump forward without orders. Not in that type of warfare. And with their particular circumstances- heavily outnumbered.

    Oh, I agree but discipline was not exactly the hallmark of medieval warriors. I don't think either side was disciplined to the degree that the Roman legionaries before them or the Swiss pikemen after them were disciplined.

    That is because I wasn't in charge.

    My favorite painting of the battle. That's Odo the Bishop of Bayeux wielding the club. A cleric cannot shed blood.

    @Peter1469

    I found this through your link.

    http://www.bbc.com/ww1/

    It's for the WW1 Centenary. Very well done. I really should spend more time looking at the materials offered by the BBC. It's not the specialist material I typically become absorbed in but it's chock full of factoids and great images. For someone, especially a young person, unfamiliar with the history of the war this is great.
    @Paperback Writer you have some affiliation with the BBC, correct? Kudos to the folks there.
