Quoth Ronald Reagan.
And he signed the determinate sentencing act, which sent millions more to prison for very long stretches, and doubled down on the War on Drugs, and villified crack cocaine use(blacks) and sentenced them to 5-7 times the time that white coke users got. All the while he ignored the rampant HIV epidemic(gay disease), and millions more died.
Drugs are a scourge, for sure. But to politisize the issue, is pandering to the worst of it.
pssst....it was black community leaders who politicized the issue of crack cocaine. See, they said racist America didn't care about the violence brought to black communities by the crack cocaine trade. So the state steps in and does all it knows how to do: crack skulls and lock people up. Who would have thought cracking down on crack (no pun intended) would result in more black men in jail!? You're racist when yuo do and racist when you don't.
