    Urban planning: Prioritize Pedestrians

Interesting concepts in prioritizing pedestrians specifically with crosswalks. The future of the city.

6 intersection designs that protect pedestrians. With pics at the link.

I like Toronto's model. The underground makes for great access all over town on foot and keeps you out of the elements. Not practical everywhere but it works for them.

I wish we had public transportation...we have limited bus service in downtown areas only...nothing else. I don't think the south has much public transportation anywhere except Atlanta. When they talk about building bike paths, you'd think people were asking for their first born child. Pedestrian cross walks are just used to make it easier to aim at walkers....

We have middle of the block crosswalks. People get splattered in those all the time. Drivers get caught by surprise at them cause there is no cross street. Back in the 80's I was riding with my friend Crazy Paul downtown and he wasn't paying attention at one of these and I had to raise the the alarm. He mashed on the brakes and we screeched right up to within inches of this rather flamboyant gay couple. Their reaction was so comical that our adrenalin glands never had a chance to fire. It is impossible to apologize to someone when you're laughing so hard you can barely speak. They told us off real good and swatted Paul's car a few times with their hand bags and we were still laughing too hard to eat our lunch a half hour later. Anyway, we have run them two down had I not been paying attention. I'm like that when I am a passenger in a car.
