De La Salle has a week off

I bored some of you by talking of De La Salle high school football team. But this team is special. At least one book was produced over this program. A movie has been on the circuit recently called Standing Tall. This program is special. I don't quite know how to explain how any high school reels off 151 victories in a row spanning a dozen years. It is not that they play chumps. They are so good that no league welcomes them. Everybody knows the league they play in will automatically crown them champions and this has gone on almost forever since their major winning streak started around the early 1990s. They have lost several games once the streak ended but still manage to be in the top with the best in America. None of those ever won 151 games nor came close.

The last victim of De La Salle was James Logan high school, one of Northern CA's best teams.

This week James Logan whipped the hell out of a team and they had been murdered by De La Salle the week before.

Too bad you guys can't see them play in person. They play more like a pro team than what they are.

More boring stuff about this catholic high school that is storied and in a movie.

And to boot, Wikipedia wrote this about the past head coach.

Robert Joseph "Bob" Ladouceur (born July 3, 1954) is a former American football coach. He began coaching the De La Salle High Spartans in Concord, California in 1979, when he was twenty-five years old. He took over a program that had never enjoyed a winning season since the school's founding in 1965, and was one year removed from a season in which their only two wins were against the California School for the Deaf and a game forfeited by their opponent for playing an ineligible player. His first season as head coach resulted in their first winning season. His second season resulted in their first appearance in the California Prep Football State Rankings and began De La Salle's evolution into a perennial champion. From 1992 to 2004, he guided the team to 12-consecutive undefeated seasons, setting a national winning streakrecord for high school football of 151 consecutive wins—a record in US amateur sports matched only by the 159-game winning streak of Passaic High School in men's basketball, and the 459 match win streak of Brandon High School in men's wrestling.[1] Ladouceur was enshrined to the National High School Hall of Fame in 2001. His team has topped the USA Today rankings five times and he is a three-time coach of the year. He retired on January 4, 2013 with a career record of 399–25-3.[2] His .934 winning percentage is a record among coaches with 200 or more wins. Ladouceur is the all-time winningest coach in California high school football and has led the De La Salle program to numerous championships.

Look at the box score. De La Salle could have won 100 to 7 but they back off. They start to run up the score and simply back off. I have seen this happen a lot of times. They want to win, but not simply to run up scores. They put in the water boy, the school janitor and the bus driver in order not to rack up the other school. They can't help scoring 50 points.

A book was written trying to explain their system. They have a system that churns out outstanding players every year. Seldom to they have any let down and we are totally shocked if they lose a game or two which seldom happens. We normally are treated to zero losses.

Former Coach Ladouceur is still helping the coaches. The coach that took over was trained by Bob and follows the same system.

I heard recently that pro teams have tried and tried to snatch Ladouceur but he loves teaching at the catholic school. First, parents of football playing kids heard of the program and try to get their sons to the school. The school has a very good reputation and the kids that make it in the pros to my knowledge, don't get into trouble in college or as a pro. After reading the book, this much is clear. The kids are devoted to the program and quite willing to work twice as hard as most kids are. The coaches teach them very well. I never heard of any football program where the kids seem so devoted to each other either. I have not at any time heard a bad word about any of the kids.

The book, i did read. I did not go to see the movie.

It's not about the streak, or being the all-time winningest. I appreciate the benchmark and the recognition of the long haul and my hard work, but it's about being a positive part of so many young kids' lives. It's pretty humbling. -Bob Ladouceur, ESPN, September 2008
When did Bob Ladouceur begin his coaching career? In researching the When the Game Stands Tall true story, we discovered that Bob Ladouceur began coaching at De La Salle High School in Concord, California in 1979 when he was 24. The real De La Salle Spartans had only won one game during the season prior to when Bob Ladouceur came on board. Prior to taking the reigns at De La Salle, he had been an assistant coach at Monte Vista High School in Danville, California. It was around that time that Ladouceur worked briefly as a counselor at a juvenile hall. Watching the same kids returning over and over, it was there that he realized that he wanted to mold young people before they had a chance to veer in the wrong direction. -ESPN

    De La Salle strikes again.

This time they whipped another premier team by a huge score. Foothill Hi is ranked number 2.

    http://www.contracostatimes.com/my-t...-much-foothill

The De La Salle High football team ran at will in a 56-21 thumping of visiting Foothill on Friday in the battle between the top two ranked teams in the East Bay.
The Spartans (8-0) were led by 180 yards and three touchdowns by Andrew Hernandez and another 156 yards rushing and a score by Antoine Custer.
De La Salle's starting quarterback Anthony Sweeney suffered a dislocated elbow battling for extra yards in the first quarter, but Chris Vanderklugt stepped in and the Spartans didn't miss a beat, amassing 517 yards rushing.
Foothill (7-1) gave the Spartans defense a stern test. The Falcons' Kyle Kearns passed for 159 yards and ran for a touchdown. Ruben Mercado made a leaping, one-handed catch in the second quarter to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Isaiah Floyd.
Floyd also returned a kickoff 76 yards to set up a touchdown that cut the deficit to 42-21 during an entertaining third quarter.
"I like what our offense did," De La Salle coach Justin Alumbaugh said. "I like how Vandy came in and did a good job running our offense. Overall, besides one fumble, we scored every time and moved the ball down the field. Our defense needs a lot of work."

    Next report....
James Logan 60, Newark Memorial 0: Rogelio Reyes set the tone for the host Colts with a 73-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage in this nonleague contest against the Cougars (3-5)

De La Salle killed James Logan as shown in this thread earlier.

The very best...PLAY against the best. Cincinnati Moeller played Lakewood St Ed last week. They combined have 20 state Championships. Moeller played 3 OTHER teams that won Ohio 4 times since 2000. Tonight they Play Louisville Trinity. Trinity is not unbeaten this year... but had 3 unbeaten Kentucky Champ years in a row Teams like Moeller, Trinity, St Eds, Cincinnati Elder.... can't find enough local teams that are willing to lose big.. so.. they tend to have to play teams at the elite level. When elite teams play AVERAGE teams... the second half is Juniors and Sophomores.

For Moeller......often the JV and Freshmen teams are real good. So.. they get the best of that and returning underclassmen AND.. they have a system that WORKS..they have good coaching.

Sometimes you sort of get lucky. Barry Larkin ...the HOF Shortstop...was an All State DB. His older Brother.. Second team All Amerioca LB. Younger Brother... First team All America DB.

Moeller... may not repeat as state champ. They lack the running game and the top WR has been injured.
Last year... in the State Final, QB Gus Ragland passed for 3 TD's...ran for 5. He was state Player of the Year. They had 2 guys first Team All State on D. Add a 295 lb OT who got a scholarship to U Miami, a FAST 6-4 Reciever..now at Wisconsin.....not bad. This Year.. they do have a 285 lb DT who will play for Notre Dame next year, a big Junior TE with many offers to major schools. League rivals..though..have some special underclassmen. Elder has a JR OT who is 300 lb.. rated Ohio's BEST Junior.. They also have a damn good JR QB. We beat them this year. Next year? Not liking the odds.

This season, I believe that De La Salle front lines on offense and defense are as large as professional players are.

There are few teams that can earn the top ranking of the mythical high school champion but De La Salle does it quite often.

Mind you, the entire student body of De La Salle is something like 600 students. Clearly parents seek to have their sons there for sports.

Well...Cincinnati Moeller is in the Semifinals going for a threee peat and their 10th State Title of the 40 yrs Ohio had playoffs.

like DeLassalle.... Most teams don't wanna play Moeller. They are in the tough league in S Ohio. 2 of the other teams won State 3 yr since 2000. The other... LaSalle probably has their best team, but enrollmend dropped a bit so they are Division II now. They have a 2000 yd RB, and a Soph who ran for 1000+...The JR QB is good, the D is good. They played TOP Div I teams all year... are gonna dominate State in Div II. Moeller may again Meet St Eds.. usually the top N Ohio team in the finals.

Top teams... play TOP teams. It sharpens you like a blade. When Moeller...St Eds, Louisville Trinity, St X play a team that's just GOOD.. then underclassmen get good experience. Moeller, DeLassalle, St Eds....HAVE coaching, a system, traditions. Kids want to be on the team, then they want to be great..to be champs. Over at Deer Park high... they can't beat the average team. and they are Div IV At Deer Park... it's no big deal to be on the team. Players don't WORK as hard, play as hard. They party. They fool with Video games. At DeLassalle.. at Moeller..at ANYWHERE you EXPECT to be in the running for State Champ...it's way different.

Moeller is where Barry Larkin and Ken Griffey Jr and Buddy Bell played. Larkin was all State in Football. He has 2 brothers..who also were All State.

Moeller had players shine on top College teams, make it in the NFL. A couple of the best had injury issues as pros...too bad. Moeller had back to back state titles in baseball a couple years ago. Won State in volleyball several times, recently won state in Golf. Usually they are top 10 in Basketball. We play Elder,St Ex, LaSalle every year... VERY tough. We play the best in Ohio...often the best from Kentucky,Pennsylvania, Indian, Michigan... and anywhere else. Of the schools in the immediate area that are PUBLIC HS... only Colerain has the talent and balls to play the best Catholic HS teams.....they ALWAYS have FREAKY speed. Moellewr always has a TOUGH D. Last year 2 guys were 1st team All State on D. The QB was state MVP. This year, our DT is 285 ,has a Notre Dame Scholarship. We don't have the running game we usually have... the D has to be great. I'll be happy to make it to the finals.

I lived in N Cal. I know about DeLassalle...I'd have LOVED to see thenm vs Moeller last year.
