My ex was an alcoholic. He was a mean drunk. I believe it does run in families. There is a weakness, a tendency to crawl into a bottle when things get stressful.

My eldest daughter, 40, is also an alcoholic. She was in a bad marriage and started drinking in her twenties...vodka mostly. She is 5'1', 115 lbs. and was arrested for a DUI last year. She was pulled over for speeding, not being drunk. She smelled of booze so he asked her to do the road sobriety test. She passed. He asked her to blow and she complied. She blew .022, almost 3x the legal limit. The trooper was in disbelief, so he had her blow again. The same result. She is a functioning drunk.
She went to AA and is sober now. It's been 18 months. She looks better, feels better and is $10k poorer.

10K poorer. But at least she is alive. And sober. Thanks for sharing Redrose. 10K is nothing when put into perspective huh?
The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.

She is lucky that she stopped before someone was hurt. Even when I drank regularly, I didn't drive. My mother was killed by a drunk driver (how's that for irony?) while crossing a street in Minneapolis.

This is why people should do pot or shrooms. Alcohol is a dangerous depressant.
And if we should die tonight
Then we should all die together
Raise a glass of wine for the last time
Calling out father, prepare as we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on the mountain side
    Desolation comes upon the sky..

it's not the substance, it's the person.

When she pled out, she thanked the trooper for saving her life. She was doing 93mph.
She will battle it for the rest of her life. She was mauled by a pit bull last Spring, and I was afraid she would fall back into drinking because of the pain, and physical and emotional scarring. It cost her her career, she was a leg model. But she seems to be doing OK. She's back in school and doing very well.
    Fingers crossed.

I'm with you Pol, I like drinking a bit too much, because of that I try to limit myself to Friday and Saturday nights (and during the Ravens games). I am weird tho, in that I have really good self control with substances, and I rarely drink alone (never seem to finish even 1 beer by myself), but in the right company I can finish off fifths of anything by myself. I am also far from a mean drunk, I dance (music or not) and generally am the life of the party till I drop.

When I got old enough (and working in the mental health field) I started reading about alcoholism. I really think my father & brother were self-medicating for depression...men were not allowed to admit they were depressed. My mother drank because my father drank. None of them realized they were making the depression worse. I don't understand the war on drugs while the state profits from the sale of alcohol. Makes no sense to me...

That is terrible. So very sad. Again, I am deeply sorry for the loss of your Mother
