There is absolutely no reason that a system like Canada's or Germany's isn't scalable. There is a framework set out by the federal govt and the program is implemented by the states (provinces).

In the end you get the same or better care for all your citizens at a lower cost. Insurance companies make obscene profits from people's misery. Could you imagine having to pay for insurance that would cover you for the police and fire departments?

What makes you think the obscene profits would cease? All it would accomplish is add another layer between the patient and doctor. Monopolies do not work. Much of the chatter on these sites is complaining about too much power, and too many rules, and you want to give ALL the power of your healthcare to the government. DUMB!

Universal healthcare removes the insurance companies for basic care, doctor's visits, operations etc... In Canada my private insurance only has to cover meds, room upgrades, dentist, glasses, physiotherapy etc...

The Govt becomes the insurer. You pay through taxes and instead of the money going to profits for investors, CEO's...it goes into hospitals directly.

It it will not work in the USA. Only 50% of the people pay federal taxes.

So you get same day treatment for every ailment? No waiting? How about dental work? Eye care?
And if we should die tonight
Then we should all die together
Raise a glass of wine for the last time
Calling out father, prepare as we will
Watch the flames burn auburn on the mountain side
    Desolation comes upon the sky..

In the US the extreme poor don't pay. They have government assistance.

I was in the UK and most people there are paying extra for services so they are hit twice, first in taxes, second in upgrades. I'm not seeing the bargain for the US when we have Medicaid/Medicare.

I would have to respect your opinion since you live in Canada and seem to like the system. We have some relatives in the Toronto area who have nothing good to say aboiut the care. She says "it's great if you never get sick." She actually came to the US to have surgery which she paid for.
I agree with @Matalese we have too many on the dole who receive subsides and pay nothing in taxes.

My family in the UK are divided in their opinion of the health care system there. They've never known anything else to compare it with. When I was there and saw what my grandmother was subjected to, I was horrified. She died on the operating table.

I've heard stories about wait times...never had a problem. Hospitals are hospitals. I've been to them in the US and the UK, they're not much different.

I have a family doctor. I have to make an appointment just like anyone. Usually the next day, depending on availability. But there are walk in clinics as well.

If I need treatment I get it. The few times my doctor has referred me to a specialist at a hospital, it was the next day. X rays or ultrasound same day in the same building as my doc.

Dental work and eyecare are separate and not covered. I have private insurance for those.

The government of every nation that provides "free healthcare" is burdened with the cost to the point where they can no longer afford to contribute to their own military defense. The military of every Western nation except the United States is a sad joke. We are basically carrying the load for all our "allies" who are sponging off us to pay for their "free healthcare."
