Harper at G20 - tells Russia get out of Ukraine

Stephen Harper had a showdown with Vladimir Putin on Saturday, telling the Russian leader to "get out of Ukraine" in a dustup at the Group of 20 summit in Australia.

Harper's spokesman, Jason MacDonald, said the prime minister was speaking to a group of G20 leaders at a private leaders' retreat on Saturday morning when Putin approached and extended his hand.

MacDonald said Harper told Putin: "I guess I'll shake your hand but I have only one thing to say to you: You need to get out of Ukraine."

According to MacDonald, Putin did not respond positively. He didn't provide further details. But a spokesman for the Russian delegation said Putin's response was: "That's impossible because we are not there."

Harper seems to be a bit of a bull in a china shop. There have been numerous instances of him alienating Canada on the world scene (UAE, Iran, etc.). Not sure that this was very wise.

I'm no fan of Harper, but I think he did the right thing.

If Russia was at least honest about it I could see some credibility. They are currently invading the Ukraine.

Yet some on the right are still lining up to kiss his ass.

The Ukrainian (mis)adventure is harming the Russian economy greatly. If the west wasn't so girlie when it comes to diplomacy we would egg them on and keep them occupied.

I'm not sure if it happened on this forum, but the right's infatuation with The Pootin was intense earlier this year.

How is Russia in the Ukraine any different from America in Iraq, other than the fact that at least the Ukraine is geographically close to Russia?
