I think the idea of sprawl has shown its pitfalls already. The numerous systems that are involved in supporting giant urban centers are far more than modern convenience. They are expensive ,vulnerable life support networks that can trigger utter chaos if there is even a slight glitch. In times of stability they grow but when the string breaks and pandemonium is everywhere cities are evacuated.
My beliefs are a distillation of what I was taught as a child and what I observe as an adult.

Huge cities always have homeless people. Huge cities are always liberal. Coincidence?

Excellent point ... in fact, some of the GOP hysterics are actually warning all of America to be prepared for the chaos that will come to you as soon as the Ferguson Grand Jury verdict comes in.

Speaking of someone who can't stay on topic. Sheeesh!
You actually believe this kind of sitting around crying like a wuss blaming Repubs addresses the topic ?

The people who settle Mars will be pioneers. But I suspect they will establish a city and not a rural type of settlement.

Look at who joins the military and who doesn't. While people from all walks of life can be found in the military, the majority

That is more of an outpost. Good concept for a city but very limited in size and population. Even a city as small as the one I live in depends heavily on the arrival of hundreds of trucks a day to keep provisioned. Just watched a show on History that mentioned off shore floating cities for the rich. I would like to see the whole design on these islands and what sort of outside dependence they rely on.
