Democrats should embrace liberal brand: Column

Don't blame voters for not knowing which party has their backs. Too often Democrats don't really say.

It turns out that people tend to like increases in the minimum wage and they like increases in Social Security retirement benefits. Support for the former was evident in successful ballot initiatives in "red" states, and support for the latter consistently is evident in public opinion polls.

It's fair to say that in this recent election, voters signaled their support for more liberal economic policies and for the candidates who most opposed them. This is a caricature, of course, but when conservative candidates win elections to statewide offices in places where minimum wage increase ballot initiatives pass, it's not an entirely unreasonable one. Just what were voters thinking?
