$1M Baby Bill Denied by Blue Cross

Saskatchewan Blue Cross won't reverse its decision to deny the claim of a Humboldt, Sask., family facing a bill of $950,000 after Jennifer Huculak-Kimmel gave birth prematurely while vacationing in Hawai last year. However, a Toronto-based lawyer is interested in helping the family fight its massive medical bill.

Sivan Tumarkin, a partner with Samfiru Tumarkin Barristers and Solicitors, is offering his services pro bono to the Humboldt family in a case involving a hospital in Hawaii...

The family had purchased travel insurance, but were turned down by Blue Cross, which cited a "pre-existing condition." The insurer said a bladder infection two months before the pregnancy meant Huculak-Kimmel was ineligible to receive coverage.
Jennifer Huculak-Kimmel's $1M baby bill denied by Saskatchewan Blue Cross

Another private insurer full of crap. A bladder infection 2 months before she was pregnant is a pre-existing condition? I've filled out plenty of insurance forms and they've never asked about bladder infections. Saskatchewan Blue Cross just doesn't want to pay the bill and I hope they get $#@!ing owned in court. Thankfully a lawyer has offered his services free of charge.

The hospital who provided the services should sue also, they're the ones getting stuck with the bill.

If this person wins the lawsuit, I'm guessing the hospital will have a legal claim on the settlement.

Oh yeah, btw - this stuff is the basis for medical tort reform.

A bad baby can cost millions, tens of millions, hundreds of millions or more over a lifetime. Be an OB in a non-tort reform state and get malpractice insurance, and good luck with that.

No doubt, and I'm sure the family just wants to pay it and have it over with rather than be paying off the bill for the next however many decades of their life.

Used to be the doctors would advise women in the last trimester of their pregnancy not to fly.
I know I was limited from flying, and when I did at 4 months, I was sicker than a dog the whole time.

Wait a minute! What was she doing in Hawaii? Did she have her doctors permission to travel so late in pregnancy?

She gave birth 9 weeks early, so flying should have been alright.
