The original printing was 5 books, I'm not sure where along the line it was condensed into 3

The Hobbit was written as a childrens novel also.

None of the junk in the movie (Sauron, Legolas, Radaghast the Brown) was in the original Hobbit. It was some time later that the concept of the One Ring struck JRRT and he fashioned the story after that.

The Necromancer was Sauron regaining his strength but that was an afterthought well after the release of the Hobbit.

Another problem was that the Hobbit series was a "prequel" to the LOTR. The setting was well over 50 years earlier but the actors were older. They had the same problem with Gods and Generals which was a prequel to Gettysburg.

LOTR and the Hobbit series had some problems and the Hobbit should have been two movies, not three. But most people thought that no one could ever make a workable film of LOTR or the Hobbit and Peter Jackson proved them wrong.

    In my honest opinion?

The movies - all of them were more of the same old same old Hollywood glam, that's what sold. The storyline was just elevator music.

If you know the stories, both the Hobbit and LoTR then you'll also know that a whole lot of all those movies are pure fabrications and maybe about half the actual story is represented. Less than half most likely.

Any my wife chuckles at this too "fabrication".

"It's fiction" she says, "how can it 'didn't happen that way'"?

Some of the additions were a good idea - the White Council expelling Sauron from Dol Guldur happened in the same year as the events of The Hobbit, but the way they did it was ridiculous. The White Council's battle with the Nine looked like Mortal Kombat.

Exactly, and the Smaug encounter and that golden dwarf statue - ridiculous. Way, way too much fighting and acrobatics.

    The barrel ride? Pathetic.

It's a good thing they saved that gold statue thing until the end because I would have shut it off if it were earlier in the movie.

I actually didn't mind the barrell scene too much. It was in the books, though admittedly not so Hollywoodized (mostly because that whole orc chase by Azog and Bolg never happened), but Bombur's bit was cool and amusing.

My biggest problem with the trilogy is too much CGI.
