Why does it cost you so much for health care

I am presenting another C-SPAN video. This is an Obama pal asking questions of a reputable journalist.

If you believe you are better off, good .... however you no doubt don't know the entire story.

If you spend time in a hospital, and study those bills, you see it different than a person who simply goes to the doctor on a scheduled visit. Your doctor should be your best friend when you are ill. Surely you don't want a person treating you that sees you as a cash receipt or a dollar to his account. You want honesty.

By the way, near the end of the video is a shocking surprise. Some of you will be entertained.

So, on to the show. You will learn reasons why health care costs far too much. You will hear some suggested solutions.

I happen to recall when health care was cheap. Take my youngest sister as an example. Mom delivered her at home. The doctor drove to our house and delivered her. And nobody complained about cost. Back when I grew up, seeing a doctor was not going to break your bank.

Mine are paid by Medicare with the balance paid for by Medi-Cal.

The bills show the doctor gets crapped on.

The drs are making it up now by having youi come back for 2 and 3 month followups instead of 6mths.

The doctor bill is dramatically slashed.

Yes, that's correct. But that's how the system has worked for decades. It's not a bad thing.

It's the part of healthcare that most people don't understand.

Medicare is designed to pay providers enough to cover costs and capital, basically. Medicaid generally doesn't cover costs but it's better than nothing. Commercials are individually negotiated and generally pay the best, including the Blues.

If a doc bills $100 for an office visit, Medicare might pay $75, Medicaid maybe $40, commercials/blues maybe a little more than Medicare. This is a simplistic approach since care/caid are cost adjusted and provide additional reimbursements for factors such as location, availability of healthcare (underserved areas), additional reimbursement for disproportionate share (if you have too many unpaid services with bad debt, self pay and Medicaid), stuff like that.

It's really, really complicated but virtually never do providers get 100% of the charges they bill.

I had to get rid of my BC/BS which I had for years, decades. No one here would accept it. Said the reimbursements were too low.
