What about when the will of the people contravenes the Constitution? Which opinion should the law observe, the law of the land or the local consensus? I know that many will argue that the administration of marriage is reserved to the states, but the Constitution discusses the equal rights of American citizens. That portion of the Constitution is deliberately broad, since enumerating every human right in every circumstance would result in a six thousand page Constitution. I am curious as to whether those most vociferous upholders of the Constitution are actually fair weather friends.
