For the last 68 years Betty Biddle's husband was her best friend, protector and hero, right up to his last dying day.
The 88-year-old Ohio World War II veteran made the ultimate sacrifice last Thursday when his family says he selflessly pushed his wife out of the way of a moving car.
The split-second decision was automatic, they told the Columbus Dispatch, but it cost Clark Biddle his life.
"I don't know if I'm going to make it without him," his widow, also 88, told the paper while clutching a photo of her beloved high school sweetheart in her hands.
The Norwich Township couple was crossing a parking lot to meet old high school classmates for lunch that afternoon when tragedy struck.
Betty Biddle, who suffered a broken hip two years ago, was relying on her walker and husband as they passed behind a parked car, right as it started backing up.
Without a moment's hesitation he pushed her out of the way, causing her to suffer a bruise. But in the process he was struck by the car himself and suffered massive brain trauma upon hitting his head on the pavement.
He died two days later.
"I will never get over turning around and seeing him on the ground," his widow told the paper while surrounded by family that included her two children. "Sometimes I wish I were with him. I really do."
