When I enlisted around that time it was still a pain center to get enlisted in the Marine Corps. I don't know about the army standards of the time.

But now? They can be picky because the economy is in shambles and people with families need work. In times like WWII you took just about anybody with a pulse because you lost 5k men a day. Now? Not so much.

Last I heard 6 out of 10 potential recruits are turned down for the Army. I suspect it is more in the Marines.

It is a shame- the zero defect attitude probably blocks real warriors from service. It is very different from when I enlisted (1987). If we got into a fight downtown the only issue was whether you won. Now you get kicked out.

Many potential recruits (the one's who get weeded out) can barely write their names with a crayon. The armed forces normally want recruits with at least half of brain as opposed to having a carrot for a brain.

If you have a college degree the armed forces are definitely interested in you.

Another thing, you can buy military manuals online or at a surplus store, or from some guy that was in the army.

But getting a book and reading it does not mean you are trained by the military.
