Iran: friend or foe? Or something else?

Iran: friend or foe? Or something else? RealClear World picked out a couple of editorials that discuss what Iran means to the world today.

The NYTs says that Iran matters most to the West. Basically, that Iran is the natural counter to militant Sunni Islam. The author supports a nuclear deal with Iran.

Do the Iran deal. Defeat the barbaric marauders of Islamic State. In the fragmenting mayhem of the Middle East, these must be the American and Western priorities.

They are objectives rooted in the strict Western interest. An Iranian nuclear accord lasting at least a decade that ring-fences a fiercely monitored and strictly limited enrichment program compatible only with civilian use is not an ideal outcome, but it is the best conceivable outcome of protracted talks that have already reversed the nuclear momentum in Iran and established a bridgehead between Washington and Tehran.
The Sydney Morning Herald maintains that Iran is as dangerous to Western interests as the Islamic State is.

Iran is rising, and the Sunni Arab states have had enough. As the Saudi Foreign Affairs Minister, Saud al-Faisal, has said: "We see Iran involved in Syria and Lebanon and Yemen and Iraq and God knows where."

While the Saudis and Egyptians are their leading powers, the wider bloc of Sunni-majority nations includes Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iraq.

A group of the Sunni Arab nations are taking an active part in the air war against the Houthis in Yemen.

Yemen is the world's latest failed state. But Saudi Arabia shares a 1800 kilometre border with its southern neighbour and has no intention of allowing it to become an Iranian playground.

People in the Middle East have been killing each other for thousands of years, and they will be killing each other until the end of time.

It's a waste of bandwidth for you to post these stories.

Agree with your first point. US policy should take this into consideration. Currently we are supporting both sides in different parts of the battle field.

    Neg on the second point.

    Red face

Granny says, "Ask `em how dat embassy takeover is working out fer `em now?"...

Iran's Supreme Leader Blames Tehran's 'Enemies' For Inciting Protests
January 2, 2018 - Iran's Supreme leader Ali Khamenei, speaking for the first time since protests broke out in his country last week, accuses "enemies of Iran" of meddling in the country. At least 21 people have been killed in the protests that broke out throughout cities across the country since last Thursday, over Iran's weak economy and rising food prices.
Nine of the confirmed dead were killed overnight, according to Iranian state television, which reported that six of them were protesters killed when they stormed a police station in Qahdarijan. An 11-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man were killed in the town of Khomeinishahr. As NPR's Greg Myre reported over the weekend, President Hassan Rouhani issued a televised warning to protesters that his government would show "no tolerance" for anyone who incites unrest. A member of Iran's paramilitary Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed in the town of Najafabad, reportedly by a hunting rifle. Such rifles are common in the Iranian countryside, according to The Associated Press, but it was not clear if the IRGC member was the same police officer reportedly shot on Monday night.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamanei speaks during his meeting with students in Tehran, Iran in October

Al Jazeera reports that: "[About] 450 people have been arrested with the Tehran governor's deputy giving the following breakdown: 200 on Saturday; 150 on Sunday; and 100 on Monday. The detention figures for other Iranian cities cannot be confirmed." Khamenei, posting on his official website, said: "In the recent days' incidents, enemies of Iran utilized various means - including money, weapon, politics and intelligence apparatuses - to create problems for the Islamic system," he said. The supreme leader said he would elaborate in coming days.

The AP writes: "President Hassan Rouhani has acknowledged the public's anger over the Islamic Republic's flagging economy, though he and others warned that the government would not hesitate to crack down on those it considers lawbreakers. All the protest rallies so far haven't received prior permission from the Interior Ministry, making them illegal under Iranian law." President Trump on Monday said Iran is "failing," writing in a tweet that the "great" Iranian people have been "repressed for many years" and that now is the "TIME FOR CHANGE!" in Iran.

The US heavily depends on always having a war with some country as it is profitable for our military. We sell the weapons to the people that we are fighting against while we increase the number of US soldiers who will fight them. Iran just happens to be on list who make this all work.

Iran's only offense has been to demand their political independence from western governments. But the arrogant imperialists in the US government think they own the world, so they bully and intimidate Iran relentlessly while brainwashing Americans into hating Iranians.

What did Iran do that was so wrong? Overthrow a monarchy and expel a foreign occupier? Isn't that exactly what Americans did in 1775?

What a load of bull$#@!. You don't need nukes to be free of anything. Glad, though, that you aren't one of the brainwashed.

Took our embassy staff as prisoners. The civilized world doesn't do that. If Carter had balls, Iran would just be another name on a map.
